I Tasted Wagyu For The Fist Time And Quit Being A Vegetarian
Please don’t hate or judge me for switching sides, but I just had to do after partaking in such a delicacy.
First off, I am(was) a vegetarian. I grew up in what I’d like to say was a traditional household. I ate cereal for breakfast on most days, some sort of Vegi-sandwich. Deciding to become a vegetarian sound pretty challenging but once you learn the environmental impact eating meat has on the planet and the horrific truth about our food industry it becomes a no brainer.
Even though I began being vegetarian for moral reasons–because I loved animals and didn’t want to support abusive factory farming practices–I also believed that by being vegetarian, I was automatically doing the healthiest thing possible. Now I know that is not true. I’m not saying that there’s no way to be healthy and vegetarian, of course there are people that do well on a vegetarian diet, but it really depends on your body type and whether you are doing your diet in a healthy way. There are healthy and unhealthy ways to do every diet.
So, I often stared at friends whenever we stepped out to a restaurant and wondered what it will be like to have a taste of the forbidden. I often asked them what it feels like eating meat(the taste of meat) and they would say that it tastes a lot like soy curls, mushrooms, or seitan that’s been flavored with soy sauce, cumin, paprika, etc. as found in seitan “beef” recipes. I would also say that the taste of “Better than Bouillon” vegetarian beef broth is similar to what beef broth would taste like. These have to be as comparisons, vs. descriptions because our language is short in the taste department. I would describe the consistency and mouth feel as a bit different than the taste. Meat, I would say, has the denseness of seitan with more give and more juice. I would describe the juices as a cross between watery and oily. This all described cooked meat on a plate, not raw meat so that would be a little different and of little use.
This kept my mouth watering and curious for more. I started having thoughts of actually going through with the act, but didn’t have enough courage to go through with the act because I believe animals are also an intelligent species and so equally deserve a right to be here.
A few days later, I finally made up my mind to go through with the act. I did some research as to the best tasting quality meat. I fell upon A5 wagyu beef prime cut. The marble should be exquisite and beautiful. I just had to do it. I learned of a new taste, Umami.
Umami is as moreish a taste as salt and sweet, and cooked meat delivers its satisfying savouriness by the vat-load. The chemicals that give us umami are products of proteins breaking down and our preference for it is thought, evolutionarily speaking, to help us choose safely cooked or preserved, protein-rich foods
I wanted to feel that so bad that in my curiousness I went on bought a few pieces of Wagyu(not A5). I slow cooked it on low heat to a medium rare level and honestly i couldn’t have been any better. I almost fainted how good it tasted. I dont even know how to describe it honestly. The only word that comes to mind is umami. I can’t believe I had been missing out on such delicacy. wWagyu was my gateway into quitting being a vegetarian.
Listen I am not saying you should quit being a vegetarian. I’m just saying now I’m doing me. I am now full of energy and like a baby I feel alive and full of energy.
I will keep updating you guys on my journey as time goes on.
