Is Medium Fair? (An Open Poll)

That is a question I have asked a few people who are writers on Medium. “Is Medium Fair?”

Most people who answered to my question were of the same opinion. Medium as a social platform wasn’t fair. So, I did some digging. Why do most people think like that? and it boiled down to the same thing.

Most social platforms reward users for general traffic to the website, views, likes. Both users of the platform and non-users. But with Medium, the stakes are different. It rewards its writers solely based on the traffic of “Subscribed Members”. So basically, is you have 1 million followers and readers of your articles who are all non-subscribed members well you aren’t getting paid. You just feeding the masses without any reward.

This strategy hardly motivates newcomers and non-medium subscribers. As a newcomer to the platform, you actually receive some decent traffic compared to other competitive platforms, but unfortunately you are not rewarded.

What really motivated to make the poll and write this article was because i saw what a paid member earned after joining the partner program and was heartbroken. She barely made $0.2 cents having close to 3k views on her articles. I saw that and almost stopped writing. I almost quit. I saw it like I was sold a fake dream about Medium. So, from there on my mentality changed. I am not looking at this as writing to escape the normal world.

Here, I can share my taught, views, ideas, stories, poems, fantasies and nerd believe. Getting paid now takes a last place in my motivation to keep writing.

Not to knock Medium completely (LOL) I think they are great platform for open writing. It has a welcoming community and very supportive too. So, you can find your niche here whatever it maybe.

With all that ssaid, #stayhungry
