Top 10 Plot Twists I Enjoyed
Landing a plot twist perfectly to the surprise of the audience is something very few have mastered. I haven’t mastered that skill to be honest because it entails dragging the story on but keeping people interested, leaving readers clues here and there for them to follow and try to piece out for themselves.
Below are a few movies I watched that gave me the best “Bang for my buck”
PS; Big spoiler alerts below
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. In a pivotal battle, Luke discovers that Darth Vader, his ultimate nemesis, is actually his father.
2. Shutter Island. During an investigation of a disappearance from a remote asylum, U.S. Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels realizes that he himself is the missing patient — and the husband and murderer of the woman that he had been trying to locate.
3. Fight Club. The narrator of the movie meets Tyler Durden, a soap salesman, and together they start a local “Fight Club.” In time, he realizes that he himself is Tyler Durden.
4. Inception. A still-spinning top at the end of the film hints that Dominick “Dom” Cobb may or may not still be stuck in an eternal dream.
5. The Sixth Sense. Child psychologist Malcolm Crowe begins working with a boy who claims that he can see ghosts. It’s not until the final act that he realizes that he himself is a ghost.
6. Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, 1960). In a turn of events, the person who kills Marion Crane in the shower at Bates Motel is not the overbearing Mrs Bates — rather, her son Norman, who has been masquerading as his dead mother this whole time.
7. Tenet. Tenet ’s twist may seem complicated at first, but much like the rest of the film, it follows a traditional heist-movie path: our heroes were one step ahead the whole time, even if we didn’t realize it. Of course, in the case of Tenet, it’s because they’d already performed the heist and went back in time to make sure the plan worked.
8. Attack On Titan. A more recent plot twist that I loved was Eren’s influence on Grisha through the Attack Titan. Zeke ‘s gradual realization that his brother manipulated their father instead of being brainwashed by him is beautifully portrayed. Fans further praised the dichotomous composure Eren displayed while his father was pushed into a state of near insanity. We all rooted for Eren from the start just to be deceived at the end
9. The Prestige. The movie follows the story of two magicians: Borden (Christian Bale) and Angier (Hugh Jackman). Borden performs a successful trick by appearing in two places at the same time, angering Angier. Angier becomes consumed with learning how Borden performed the “Transporting Man” trick. Want to know how he did it? Check out the clip below.
10. Get out. I’m not sure anyone saw this one coming. You really need to watch this movie to know to know what it’s about
…
I know the list contains a lot of Christopher Nolan in them but please bear with me, he is good at what he does. Once again this is a personal list I came up with. If you disagree feel free to comment your suggestions and who knows I might make a part 2.
